(MS) Macedonia Lake Trail to Quarry House Ruins
Details
HIKE SUMMARY: Mileage: 7.4 mi., Elevation Gain: 488 ft., Rating Moderate, Pace: 2 to 2.5 mph, Hike leader: Crystal Davenport.
HIKE DETAILS: Come out and enjoy an out-and-back hike starting at Macedonia Lake (34.597207, -81.772121). The trail winds across rolling hills and a floodplain before reaching an old homesite, where you can still see foundations and remnants from historic cottage stone mining.
Along the way, we’ll cross the Enoree River bridge and visit a picturesque swamp area via a boardwalk. The trail includes a few minor water crossings in the floodplain (generally just a few inches deep, but several along the route) and a couple of short bushwhacks to navigate around fallen trees and a damaged section of boardwalk near the river.
At the homesite, there is an open well bore, which will be clearly pointed out so it can be safely avoided.
WEATHER NOTE: If heavy rain occurs, the hike may be rescheduled since the floodplain can become submerged.
IMPORTANT: Sumter National Forest has multiple districts. This hike takes place in the district closest to Columbia, SC. Please use the Macedonia Lake coordinates or Trailhead info to ensure you arrive at the correct location.
