Hike Description
This in-and-out hike follows the Baxter Creek Trail to the summit of Mount Sterling. The trail is well-graded and non-technical, making the 4000 foot elevation gain manageable for VS and VVS hikers. During our ascent, we’ll pass through a hardwood forest and a lush moss garden before reaching an area dominated by spruce and fir trees. With any luck, we should be treated to some beautiful fall colors along the way. Then, at the summit, we’ll be able to enjoy 360 degree views from the Mount Sterling Fire Tower, the highest elevation fire tower remaining in the Eastern United States.
The hike starts at the Baxter Creek Trailhead: https://www.google.com/maps/place/35%C2%B045'03.1%22N+83%C2%B006'32.9%22W/@35.7508611,-83.1091389,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d35.7508611!4d-83.1091389?entry=ttu .
Please arrive at the trailhead by 8:30 AM. We intend to start hiking at 9:00 AM sharp.
With limited parking, carpooling is advised, and to be arranged by attendees. If the lot is full, Big Creek Trailhead is a nearby alternative.
****NOTE** A parking pass is required to park in the National Park. For pass information, go to: https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/fees.htm#11/35.5956/-83.4988**
