(VVS) Mt. Cammerer via Low Gap

Hike Description

Join us for a hike to one of the most iconic spots in the Great Smokies.

Built in 1939, the Mt. Cammerer fire tower features one of the park's most panoramic views. You'll be able to see the park's second highest peak, Mt. Guyout, to the west and the Mt. Sterling fire tower to the south. If it's a clear day, Mt Mitchell, tallest peak east of the Rockies, can be seen in the distance as well. Unlike the majority of fire towers in the region, Mt. Cammerer features a small building created with stone and wood.

To get there, we'll take the Low Gap Trail directly from Cosby Campground and climb steadily to the Appalachian Trail. We'll head north on the AT to a short spur trail to the fire tower. We'll enjoy the views and have lunch at the tower and then retrace our steps back to the campground.
