Hassocks to Lewes, Jack and Jill windmills and South Downs Way

Details
This scenic hike takes us through the breathtaking South Downs National Park, one of southeast England’s finest natural areas. We begin in the town of Hassocks, following a quiet path beside the railway to the striking Clayton Tunnel, marked by its unique Victorian castellated towers. From here, we ascend the rolling hills, passing the historic Jack and Jill Windmills. Over 200 years old, Jack is the only male-named windmill in the UK, while Jill, originally from Brighton, was relocated to her current hilltop home and is still in use today.
As we reach the ridge, we’re treated to sweeping views over the countryside and out toward the English Channel. Our route leads us over the iconic Ditchling Beacon, the second-highest point on the South Downs. Once an Iron Age hill fort, it also served as a beacon point during the time of the Spanish Armada.
Continuing east past Plumpton Plantation, we make our way up Blackcap, then descend through gentle fields to the River Ouse. The walk ends in the charming town of Lewes, entering via the gates of its Norman Castle and winding through its medieval high street, with the option to enjoy a drink in one of its historic pubs.
