# 🌿 Ware to Hertford Country Hike – River Lea, Hertford Castle & Panshanger Park

Join GO London Hiking for a scenic countryside hike near London, perfect for beginners and social walkers. This gentle trail follows the River Lea towpath, crosses Hartham Common, and continues into the historic town of Hertford. We’ll stroll through the grounds of Hertford Castle, which once sheltered Parliament during the plague years.
Our journey continues along an old railway line into Panshanger Country Park, where lakes, wildflower meadows, and ancient woodland await. A highlight is the Great Oak, planted by Queen Elizabeth I, believed to be the largest oak tree in England. Panoramic views over the Mimram Valley add to the charm, and if we’re lucky, we may spot ospreys overhead or longhorn cattle grazing.
The route finishes back in Hertford, where cosy pubs and cafés provide the perfect post-hike social.
