Southease to Lewes Hike – South Downs Way, River Ouse & Mount Caburn
Details
Discover the heart of the South Downs National Park on this scenic linear hike from Southease to Lewes. This countryside walk follows part of the South Downs Way, offering panoramic ridge views, tranquil farmland, and the peaceful charm of the River Ouse valley.
We’ll begin at Southease railway station, a tiny rural stop surrounded by green meadows and the famous round-towered Southease Church. From here, we cross the River Ouse and climb steadily up the chalk ridge, joining the South Downs Way towards Itford Hill and the high downs. Expect wide horizons, sea glimpses, and classic Sussex landscapes of open grassland and grazing sheep.
After a relaxed picnic lunch on the ridge, the trail continues past the striking slopes of Mount Caburn — one of the area’s most iconic chalk hills — before descending gently into Lewes, a historic market town known for its castle, cobbled streets, and independent cafés.
This 15 km linear hike combines peaceful countryside, history, and inspiring views — perfect for walkers seeking a social and scenic escape from London.
