Escape the rush of the city and immerse yourself in an incredible, high-impact 28 kilometer panoramic journey across the ancient Roman highways and sweeping chalk escarpments of the South Downs National Park. Stretching from the historic riverside village of Amberley directly to the medieval fortress town of Arundel, this epic point-to-point route is a masterclass in UK endurance trekking, curated specifically for lovers of deep history, dense woodland hangers, and rolling ridge-line horizons. We gather in the morning at London Victoria Station to head down to Amberey, stepping straight onto the trails to begin our journey across the downs.

### The Scenic Highlights & Key Viewpoints

  • Amberley Wildbrooks & River Arun: Experience your first grand look across the sweeping water meadows as we leave Amberley Station and cross one of the fastest-flowing rivers in England, teeming with wetland birdlife.
  • Bury Hill & Bignor Down: Conquer the steep chalk escarpments, marching up the giant undulating shoulders of the downs to hit major ridge-line crests with panoramic views over the West Sussex countryside.
  • Roman Stane Street: Push onward along the exact alignment of a 2,000-year-old Roman road, engineered around 50 AD by the legions to connect Chichester to London.
  • The Chalk Hangers: Wander through dense, ancient Yew and Beech woodlands that cling to the steep slopes of the downs.
  • Arundel Castle & Cathedral: A beautiful, gradual winding descent off the high downs that delivers jaw-dropping skyline views of the spectacular 11th-century castle and French-Gothic cathedral where our epic journey concludes.

### The Flow of our Day

We will launch our hike from Amberley with a quick morning briefing, and a structural warm-up before stepping onto the wilderness trail.

Our mid-hike lunch stop is perfectly positioned right on a high crest of the ridge—allowing us to relax, chat, and refuel with a massive countryside landscape unfolding right in front of us. From there, we keep our momentum going through rolling pastoral descents and ancient woodland tracks until our route is beautifully complete at Arundel.

To celebrate a magnificent day out in nature, we will finish by dropping into a wonderful, classic pub in the historic heart of Arundel for an optional, well-deserved cold drink and a chat.

### Who is this Hike For?

Everyone who is an experienced hiker especially if you like a long-distance endurance walk and love getting a full, active day out in the elements. Given the punishing 800m of vertical elevation gain and 28km distance, we will manage our energy steadily but efficiently to cover ground.
