Join Sierra Club leader David Herndon for a hike in the urban woods of Pittsburgh!

The Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Agency acquired the land for Hays Woods Park in 2016, working with city officials and conservation-minded citizens who organized themselves as the Friends of Hays Woods. The park formally opened in 2023, becoming Pittsburgh’s newest and second-largest municipal park, covering 626 acres. As we explore some of the trails in Hays Woods Park, we will keep in mind that ordinary citizens who are persistent and organized can successfully advocate for land conservation, even in urban settings.

This three-to-four-mile hike is suitable for people of various ages, for couples, for singles, and for parents bringing along children eight years and older. No special skills, physical conditioning, or equipment are required, although participants should be able to walk on mostly level ground for three to four miles. Please leave canine friends at home (but please consider bringing them back another day!!).
