We will hike eastbound on the Rachel Carson Trail for two hours, and then we will turn around and return to our starting point. If the group can maintain a pace of 1.5 miles per hour, then we will hike three miles out and three miles back, for a round-trip total of six miles. The lowest elevation of our hike is just over eight hundred feet above sea level; the highest elevation is about twelve hundred and seventy-five feet.

After the hike, participants will be encouraged to drive four tenths of a mile to nearby Emmerling Ice Cream, where we will reconvene for refreshments!

The Rachel Carson Trail, located in the northern portion of Allegheny County, covers 45.7 miles between North Park and Harrison Hills Park. The nonprofit Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy maintains the trail and advocates on behalf of the trail with many private and public land owners. The Rachel Carson Trail is one of twenty-eight “Major Trails” in Pennsylvania, according to the Keystone Trails Association.
