Are you considering transitioning to the Go programming language? ▪ Oleg Kovalov - Hedged requests in Go

Tail at scale is a great and old paper published by Google which explains motivation behind hedged requests. This tool allows to reduce latency on a big scale even by 2x. In this talk one particular open-source implementation will be explained in details.
