Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) chase

Details

Let's get out into the dark night to try to catch the Northern Lights!

On Friday, there was a strong Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun headed to Earth. We don't know for sure when it will arrive, but the prediction models say some time on June 1st or later. Space weather forecasters are warning of a strong (G3) geomagnetic storm, with a chance it could reach severe (G4) levels. If all things align, this might be an amazing show!

Today, NOAA issued a G4 storm watch warning. (For comparison, last year, before the May 10th show, we were on a G5 storm watch.) I did head out with a meetup group last year on May 10th, and we caught the big show!

I will be paying a close watch on the space weather tomorrow, and make a call on Sunday night as to whether we are heading out (most likely) and where. Be prepared to drive about 1 hr from Seattle. Charge your phone/camera, juice up your car, and bring something comfortable to sit on. When we go, we usually stay out for a bit. Warm blanket/clothes recommended, as we are most likely going to be either up in the mountains, or on the coast.

We will coordinate via a WhatsApp here:
