Our final GCP Meetup of the year is here. As winter sets in, we’ll close the season by revisiting one of the biggest shifts in our platform: migrating R workloads to Google Cloud and hosting dashboards on Cloud Run. Expect a grounded look at what worked, what didn’t, and how we’re shaping a more flexible, maintainable cloud environment going forward.

Talk #1: 50K Reasons to Modernize: R Workloads and Dashboards on GCP [Jozef Kruszynski (Product Component Lead) & Toni Liebscher (Senior Specialist Platform Engineer) at REWE International AG]

We’ll walk through our migration from on-prem R infrastructure to Google Cloud, focusing on the transition from Jenkins to Cloud Composer (Airflow) and the setup on GKE Autopilot for better flexibility and cost control. Once the data is processed, it’s presented through Shiny and Streamlit dashboards running on Cloud Run, replacing the previous closed-source tools. The talk also covers integration across GCP services, lessons from AirFlow-scheduler and logging issues, and how we restructured load balancing and access to support multiple teams efficiently.

Talk #2: SRE made easy: GCP Service Mesh [Damjan Gjurovski at Posedio GmbH]

Have you ever had to set up telemetry for a bunch of microservices and found your self surrounded by metrics with no observability in sight? The GCP Service Mesh promises a “batteries included” experience for observability and security. This talk aims to challenge that – we will look at how easy it is to set up, what you get out of the box and how quickly you reach the limits. We will also compare the tool with its open-source counterpart, Istio.
