Building Software at Google Scale: Bazel

Details

Registration on meetup.com for this event will open on Wednesday, November 30 at 12:00 p.m. EST.

Google has more than 2 billion lines of code distributed over more than 9 million source files. This talk will be a deep technical dive into how Google designed a build system to handle that kind of scale. Bazel (https://bazel.build/) is Google's platform independent open source build tool, now publicly available in Beta. Bazel has built-in support for both client and server software, including client applications for both Android and iOS platforms. It also provides an extensible framework that you can use to develop your own build rules.

Bazel Team Presenters:

Ulf Adams

Ulf has spent the last 7.5 years at Google, where he's worked on the build system, and now holds the title of technical lead and manager for a group of sixteen software engineers in this area. The build system itself was open sourced earlier in 2015 at http://bazel.build (http://bazel.io/). Ulf doesn't just juggle multiple project priorities, he also juggles up to 5 balls (and up to 11 clubs with two partners), and does full contact sword fighting (with foam swords). He studied Computer Science at the University of Rostock before going to Stanford University, where he finished with a MS in Computer Science. He pursued a PhD at the University of Rostock for a few years before joining Google.

David Stanke

David is a product manager in Google Cloud, focused on enhancing developer productivity through build and test tools including Bazel. Prior to joining Google in 2014, he was on the engineering side, as CTO for TheaterMania.com, a provider of web content and e-commerce services to the performing arts industry. He keeps one foot in each world as a member of both the NYC CTO club and the NYC Product Managers club. David holds degrees from Brown and Columbia, and is an amateur carpenter and father.

Helen Altsuhler

Helen is a senior engineering leader in Google Cloud, responsible for managing a multi-year transformational program for scalable developer build and test tools, including Open Source platform Bazel.build. Prior to Google, Helen was the CTO at the fintech startup PeerIQ, where she built data and engineering teams. During her time there, she also created a cloud based analytics platform for peer to peer lending and sold it to key institutional clients. She started her career as a software engineer at JP Morgan, after obtaining a CS degree at Pace University. She grew into technical leadership and Executive Director roles, responsible for technology delivery in Credit Risk, Big Data and Analytics. Helen is passionate about talent development and is a frequent hackathon mentor/judge, women in tech guest speaker, and Girls Who Code facilitator.

We expect space to fill up quickly. You can typically catch talks once posted to our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAD8A7B6D66DDD297). Open captions will be available at the event.
