Building large scale semantic retrieval with Elasticsearch
Over the past two years, we at Meltwater have built MIRA, our new insight chat based GenAI agent. The search and retrieval part of MIRA is implemented by a combination of our existing petabyte sized Elasticsearch cluster as well as a brand new, 10s of billions scale 'vector search cluster' powered by Elasticsearch. In this session, we’ll walk through the architecture, the benchmarks and tests that we made, the problems we hit, and the lessons we learned along the way.

The talk covers our Elasticsearch 7.x to 8.x upgrade journey, key challenges like performance issues from frequent document updates, and lessons learned from upgrading large clusters. Mitigations, code rewrites, timeline, and operational tweaks that ensured data safety and a smooth upgrade.
