What we’re about
Gotham Girls Surf Collective is the women’s arm of Gotham Surf Collective. Our group offers a positive, supportive environment for women of all levels to progress, meet other surfers and get out in the water together in the Rockaways and surrounding beaches.
Outside of the water, we host happy hours, workshops, and support local Rockaway community efforts whenever possible. We believe in a holistic approach to surfing in this special spot that includes keeping the beaches clean and supporting the local businesses around the breaks where we surf.
A note for complete beginners: we’ll be the first ones to call ourselves kooks, but to attend one of our meetups you should know basic surf etiquette and feel comfortable entering the water without an instructor and safely handling a board. We do not offer lessons at the meetups, just good vibes and support!

FAQs…
Who can join?
Anyone! If you’re still playing in the whitewater, you’ll be in good company and if you’re a pro, you can teach the rest of us a thing or two.
Where do you surf?
We mostly surf in and around B90 in the Rockaways, though we will occasionally organize trips to other beaches in the tri-state area and hopefully a few trips abroad as well.
What do I need to attend a surf session?
To attend one of our meetups, you should be comfortable going into the water by yourself, without an instructor. If you don’t own equipment, you can rent boards, wetsuits and wetsuit accessories (boots/gloves) through our friends at Station RBNY.
What if I have never surfed before?
Welcome! We’re stoked to have you here. The best way to get started with the sport is through a lesson with an experienced instructor. Our good friends at Station RBNY surf shop offer private lessons; they also serve as home base for our surf sessions, our headquarters for renting gear and a great all around resource for surfing questions. Further down the peninsula, Locals Surf School offers group lessons that are perfect for testing the waters (pun intended.)
Do you surf in the winter?
Yes, winter is the most fun time to surf. The lineups are less crowded and you can surf at any beach in the Rockaways, whereas in the summer you can only surf at designated surfing beaches. Again, Station RBNY rents winter wetsuits, gloves and boots.
