Hagg Lake-Sidereus Wine Tasting
Details
This social ride is moderately challenging with rolling hills around a recreational lake-reservoire. We end with a 6.5 mile drive to Sidereus Winery for wine tasting--NOTE!! Tasting fee is $25 (waived with a $60 minimum bottle purchase). Our reservation is for 12:30 to 2:30
Charcuterie, hummus and small bite options are available. Feel free to bring your own picnic/snacks, however please refrain from bringing overly fragrant foods that may hinder others' tasting experience. Sidereus is a very pretty location in the country, high in the hills with a view of Mt Hood. They are known for their pinots.
If no one wants to do the wine tasting, we can pivot to Mcmenamin's Grand Lodge in Forest Grove (also a 6.5 mile drive from the car park).

The ride is a lollipop route, 16 mi. total, starting at a free parking area near the 7Star Convenience store on Old Hwy 47 in Forest Grove/Gaston. We will circle Henry Hagg Lake in a clockwise direction, and return to the car park.
There are restrooms at the convenience store, and along the way--zoom in on the route map and see the little route diversions where I mapped the restrooms when I did this ride on Sunday. There are 4, count'em, 4! restroom stops on this ride- not including the convenience store. The lake is lovely this time of year and there are several spots for photo opportunities. No passes or parking fees required.
All roads are paved and smooth with wide shoulders (average is 4-6 foot wide shoulders), low traffic, and rolling hills giving a total elevation gain of about 1500 feet. If you struggle with hills please read the route carefully before signing up. It isn't a brutal ride, but there are hills-lots of hills. A perfect ride for an e-bike, a little tougher for a regular bike.
The lollipop stick is on a road going past a mill and there are occasionally logging trucks and vehicles towing boats. Traffic is low, but there are large vehicles sometimes passing by and you should be alert.
If you're not comfortable with riding in these conditions you should skip this ride. Print out the map/cuesheet or download to your favorite GPS enabled device.
Attitude: Slow and social. Figure somewhere in the area of 11-12 mph on the flats, 2 hours of riding.
Ride Host: Kellye Just, message me here on meetup for questions.
Weather Cancellation Policy: The point of this ride is to enjoy a lovely Portland summer day. So in the event of significant atmospheric nastiness we'll cancel. Also, if air quality due to smoke is bad, we will cancel. I'll post by 7pm on Sunday evening before the ride.
Required Gear: HELMETS must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement and not a request.
Recommended Gear: Always bring plenty of water, snack for energy, a flat repair kit, including a spare tube. A tool kit and small pump is good, but if you don’t have one there is usually someone on a group ride who does. Please check to see if someone has what you might need if you don't and be prepared to ride a bus or call a cab. (Not that we'll leave you by the road broken down, because that's not us). Carry a credit card and a little cash to buy refreshments or buy that bus ticket....
Mandatory for all riders: Obey traffic laws and remember you’re a representative of the greater cycling community and should conduct yourself that way on the road. Please represent us well. If you haven't read it lately please read the Oregon Bicyclist Manual (http://goo.gl/Q8FNe3)
All riders must have their rides in good working order and must bring a flat kit & spare tube. If there is an issue with proper working or lack of equipment you may be asked to sit the ride out. Please ask for help if you are ill equipped prior to the ride. We will try to help!
All riders must be able to change a flat should they have one or have a way to get picked up (AAA, Tri-Met ticket, a friend…). There is often, but not always someone on the ride who knows how to help you change your tire, so plan accordingly.
Note: Your RSVP signifies that you agree to the following. Organizers, event hosts and other participants will not be held responsible for any individual at any event. Each rider rides at their own risk and is solely responsible for any damage to their equipment or themselves.
Final Note: RSVP’s cannot include a +1 or Guest. If you choose to bring a friend or family member, they themselves must sign up as a member of Go the Distance.
