Gradient Hiking

A heatwave is upon us. The only reasonable time to go hiking is in the evening. I'm inviting you on a walk after work, in the hills near Budaörs. Sights to see: Ördög-orom, Farkas-hegy, Odvas-hegy at night.

📅 Meeting Time and Place
2026-08-07, Friday, 19:00, at Márton Áron tér, on the corner of Törökbálinti út and Rácz Aladár út, by the statue.

🗺️ The Hike
Full track here. 9 km, 320 m elevation, 420 m descent, 3 hours. Not hard, we won't rush, but there will be noticeable ups and downs.

🚍 Transport
This is not a loop hike. We1ll begin at Márton Áron tér, and end at Budaörs városháza at 10 PM, both well-connected public transport hubs. We should be able to get back to Budapest by 11.

🎒 Bring

• Drinking water. At least 1 L recommended. It can still be quite warm in the evening hours.
• Appropriate shoes for a walk in nature.
• A light for walking in the woods at night. I have several that I can lend out. Don't drain your phone's battery by using its flash.

Exciting news: a partial solar eclipse will be visible from Budapest during sunset on Aug 12th. See this article. In the last few minutes before the sun goes down, the moon will occlude it approximately 60%, resulting in a "waning crescent sun" and unusual lighting conditions.

Let's go to Újlaki-hegy to see it happen. It's one of the few lookout spots near Budapest I know of, that has a clear view towards northwest.

🗺️ The Hike
Full track here. 8 km, 260 m elevation, 440 m descent. Easy difficulty. It should take around 4 hours, including time spent viewing the eclipse. We need to reach Újlaki-hegy by 19:22 to see the eclipse begin. Instead of going on the shortest path back and forth from Újlaki-hegy, we're taking the scenic route, checking out Árpád-kilátó, Kecske-hegyi kőfejtő, Guckler-kilátó, Kőtaraj along the way, with some excellent views over Budapest, during both daytime and nighttime.

🚍 Transport
This is not a loop hike. We'll meet when bus 11 reaches Nagybányai út stop, and walk until Bécsi út / Vörösvári út, reaching there at around 10 PM.

🎒 Bring

• Drinking water. At least 1 L recommended. It can still be quite warm in the early evening hours.
• A jacket or sweater. The air cools down fast, as night sets.
• Snacks you'd like to enjoy as we watch the sunset.
• Appropriate shoes for a walk in nature.
• Eclipse viewing goggles, if you have them. Never look directly at the sun without those. I ordered a pair myself. Hopefully the shop can deliver it in time, despite high demand.
• A light for walking in the woods at night. I have several that I can lend out. Don't drain your phone's battery by using its flash.

🗺️ The Hike
Full track and description here. 12 km, 268 m elevation, 4 hours, easy difficulty. The trail has a few exposed sections, where you should watch your step (see the cover image of the event for illustration).

🚍 Transport
Take the 9:18 H7 train from Batthyány tér to Szentendre, then bus 870 to Pilisszentlászló. We aim to catch the same bus on the way back at 14:35 from Pilisszentlászló, then the train should take us to Budapest by 4 PM. A Pest County Pass is required to use public transport. I recommend parking near the football pitch, if you're by car.

🎒 Bring

• Drinking water. At least 1 L recommended. More, in case of hot weather.
• Snacks and essentials for a whole-day outing.
• Good hiking shoes.
• Protection against the sun (i.e. hat, sunscreen).
• Optional: swimming gear, if you want to go to the beach at Szentendre after the hike.

🗺️ The Hike
Track and description here. 19 km, 650 m elevation difference, 6 hours, medium difficulty. This hike is not for beginners.

🚍 Transport
To Szendehely, Katalinpuszta via bus 1010 from Újpest-Városkapu at 8:30. A Pest County Pass is not valid for this route, as it crosses county borders.

We can take bus 1010 back to Budapest either at 14:50 or more likely 15:50, depending on our tempo. Plan to be back at 5 PM. I recommend installing the MÁVPlusz app, and buying the bus ticket during the hike, when we know which bus we're reaching.

There is a paid parking lot nearby. Please walk to the bus stop to meet us.

🎒 Bring

• Drinking water. At least 2 L recommended. More, in case of hot weather. There won't be any water sources during the hike, only in the village, at the end.
• Food and essentials for a whole-day outing.
• Hiking shoes.
• Protection against the sun (i.e. hat, sunscreen).
