A Nighttime Walk Above Budapest
Details
Welcome to Gradient Hiking ∇, where every trail brings fresh air, beautiful landscapes, and a sense of direction. Join us to stay active, enjoy nature, and share the experience with a friendly community. Come hike with us for movement, connection, and time well spent outdoors.
It's that time of the year again, when mere existence becomes an unending challenge of enduring inhumane temperatures, or simply known as summer. Luckily, there is a solution where we can still go hiking, and not be boiled alive: doing it at night. This of course comes at the cost of not being able to fully see the beauty of nature.
Our destination will be close to Budapest, so we can admire the artificial glow of the city, and also get to use convenient public transport to go home afterwards, which is not a given in most other places late at night.
📅 Meeting Time and Place
2026-07-04 20:30, Saturday, at Normafa, Gyermekvasút bus stop.
🗺️ The Walk
Full track here. 7 km, 170 m descent, 280 m elevation, 2.5 hours. Easy difficulty. Most elevation is at the end, when temperatures decrease.
We'll start from Normafa at sunset, to avoid the major heatwave, and descend to Tündér-szikla, catching a view of Budapest in the last rays of sunlight. Then we'll head into the dark forest and walk without seeing much of anything, as is typical at night, until we reach Kaán Károly-kilátó, where a spectacular panorama filled with city lights awaits us. We'll take the bus from Szépjuhászné back. After the hike, around 11 PM, I invite you to grab a drink at a bar near Széll Kálmán tér.
🎒 Bring
- Drinking water.
- Comfortable shoes and clothes for a walk in nature. It could still be 30+ degrees unfortunately.
- A light. Don't use your phone's flash, as that would drain the battery. I have a few extra I can lend.
A maximum of 15 people can attend. Let me know if you're joining. Please also let me know by Friday if you need to cancel.
See you in nature.
