Lightning Talk abstracts:
Transforming Nuclear Materials Research: Harnessing Machine Learning and Grafana for the Next Nuclear Era
Dr. Christopher Field is Co-Founder, President, and Principal Investigator at Theia Scientific.
Next-generation nuclear fission and fusion reactors are poised to sustainably meet escalating energy demands with zero carbon emissions, driving a renaissance in nuclear technology. This revival is evidenced by recent collaborations between cloud providers, AI companies, and nuclear energy firms, focusing on small modular reactors (SMRs) and fusion technologies. However, the path forward requires overcoming significant material science challenges to endure extreme reactor conditions and boost efficiency. Traditionally, nuclear materials research has been hampered by slow, manual processes. In this presentation, Theia Scientific will share their experience and excitement transforming materials research and testing workflows with a novel combination of Machine Learning, computer vision, and the Grafana platform with custom and community plugins and data sources that leverages GPU-enabled systems both at the edge and in the Cloud, for a truly unique, multi-scale deployment. Join us to learn about scaling observability from individual atoms to nuclear reactors. We will showcase the award-winning, interactive user experience that significantly accelerates scientific discovery, paving the way for nuclear energy to literally power Grafana-based applications, Cloud infrastructure, and AI systems.
