Talk 1: How we implemented the SRE multi window, multi burn rate alerts in Grafana - Andrew Dedesko and Adriano Mariani (Kijiji)
At Kijiji our alerts were flapping too often for false alarms. The presentation will cover how we created more useful alerts that we can trust.
Topics:
- Why were our alerts flapping?
- What are latency banded cumulative histograms and why are they useful?
- How did we choose which metrics to monitor out of all the metrics our applications and infrastructure generate?
- What are multi-window multi-burn rate alerts?
- How we made creating alerts easy and consistent?
Andrew Dedesko is a backend software engineer at Kijiji working on a variety of initiatives. In the past year Andrew has focused on improving the monitoring systems and metrics Kijiji uses to ensure the platform is stable and quick. Before joining Kijiji, Andrew worked at a hardware company as a full stack developer and several e-commerce companies as a backend engineer.
Adriano Mariani is a backend software engineer at Kijiji currently working on CRM related initiatives. At Kijiji, Adriano has also previously worked on projects like the On-Prem to GCP migration and improving the developer on-call experience. Before joining Kijiji, Adriano was a Computer Science student at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he completed multiple internships as a Developer at various different companies.
Talk 2: Introduction to OpenTelemetry, Marylia Gutierrez (Grafana)
Have you heard about OpenTelemetry (OTel), but you don't know what it is or how to use it? This talk introduces OpenTelemetry, a powerful and open-source observability framework. We will explore how OpenTelemetry standardizes the collection of telemetry data—logs, metrics, and traces—across various platforms. The session will cover the core components of OpenTelemetry and you will gain an understanding of how to implement OpenTelemetry in your applications.
Marylia Gutierrez is a Software Engineer at Grafana Labs, working on the OpenTelemetry project. She is a contributor to OpenTelemetry SDKs, Semantic Conventions, and Contributor Experience. Marylia has also spoken at various conferences, such as DevOpsDays, GopherCon, and the Symposium on Databases. Before joining Grafana Labs, she was an Engineering Manager and Full Stack Developer at various companies, with a focus on Observability.
Lightning talk: Introducing Explore Metrics & Explore Logs, Catherine Gui (Grafana)
This talk will showcase Explore Metrics and Logs, and demonstrate how it can help you with finding insights from your metrics and logs faster. We will share how Explore Metrics & Logs work, and new functionality you may not be aware of.
Catherine Gui is a Senior Product Designer at Grafana Labs, supporting the Metrics squad on various query and queryless experiences. Before joining Grafana Labs, Catherine was designing internal tools in the DevOps and Data Engineering space. In her free time, Catherine enjoys trying new restaurants, spending time outdoors, and listening to electronic music.
