July 13 Aliso Canyon /Reseda Horse Trails (San Fernando Valley) Challenging Hike

Details

Lately, we've been experiencing about a 50% no-show rate for our hikes. We kindly ask that if you RSVP, please make every effort to attend—or at the very least, let us know in advance if you can’t make it. Your consideration really helps us keep things running smoothly for the whole group.

We’ll be leading a hike through Aliso Canyon Park, following the Reseda Horse Trails in Granada Hills (San Fernando Valley.) The route covers approximately 5.5 miles and will begin at the Aliso Canyon Park parking lot off Rinaldi. The hike is scheduled for Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 7:30 AM, and we expect it to take about two and a half to three hours.

HIKE RATING SCALE - (This hike is challenging)
Rating a hike is subjective, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces, various obstructions, water crossings or rock hopping.

  • Easy: 1-2 miles with easy terrain (flat road) and little elevation gain.
  • Moderate: 2-4 miles with moderate terrain and some elevation change.
  • Challenging: 4 or more miles or varying terrain.

This is a good event for someone who does not want to hike alone or wants to learn the trails in the surrounding area. All of my organizers have years of experience in trail walks and runs. We will be limiting the number of attendees so the organizers and myself can safely keep track of the hikers and not overcrowd the trail. We tend to hike as a big group and leave no one behind.

Water and snacks will be provided before, during, and after the hike.

These horse trails can get very hot, especially in the summer months. If you're sensitive to heat, please carefully consider whether this hike is right for you. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids the night before and continue to hydrate after the hike to stay safe and comfortable.

This hike will be cancelled in the event of extreme heat, smoke from fires or extreme wind.

All ages are welcome, but anyone under 18 must come with a legal guardian. Make sure you bring plenty of fluids and have good hiking shoes. The day of the hike my organizers and I will be wearing red shirts in the parking lot near the park benches.

Address: 18041 Rinaldi St, Granada Hills, CA 91344.

Date: Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Time: Our leave time is 7:30 AM due to the summer heat. Please try to get there a few minutes early so we can do a quick safety briefing.

Where to meet: The parking lot in the Aliso Canyon Park. The organizers and myself will be wearing red Granada Hills Hiking Group shirts. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message through meet up or email me at odessa818@aol.com.

Distance: About 5.5 miles out and back. There are several hills that we will have to traverse.

Difficulty: Moderate and experienced hikers.

Dogs: Must be on a leash per state law, but please be aware that rattlesnakes have been known to be on the trail.

Restrooms and water fountains: Yes, they are both available in the parking lot. Please do not leave anything of value in your vehicles. Burglaries have been reported in the area.

Parking: Free

Dangers to watch out for: Rattlesnakes, coyotes, tarantulas, skunks, heat exhaustion, poison oak, stinging insects and uneven ground that can cause falls. If you are allergic to bees, please let the group leaders know and bring a EpiPen if required.
