Updated time: National Trails Day - Hikes and Picnic
Details
The Grand Traverse Chapter of the North Country Trail Association will be celebrating National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6.
The event will be held at Pickerel Lake State Forest Campground (Q2WG+MP6 Manistee Lake, Michigan or 44°47'48.0"N 84°58'23.6"W). Be warned that there is another Pickerel Lake Campground somewhere else, so use the directions provided in this posting!
There will be a choice of two guided hikes that are part of our Chapter’s series of hikes to cover our entire 100 miles of our portion of the NCT.
Long Hike:
6.7 miles from Starvation Lake Road to Pickerel Lake SFCG.
Meet at Pickerel Lake SFCG at 9:30 am. After a shuttle, we will hike south, ending at the campground.
Hike Leader: Seth Stein 847-308-3806. If you're coming on the hike, please register on meetup.
Short Hike:
Out and back hike east of Pickerel Lake SFCG. We will head east (toward ND) to maybe Papoose Lake Road and turn around and hike back, a round trip distance of 3.6 miles. If this distance is farther than you would like to go, you have the option of turning around and returning to the starting point at any time. Meet at 11:00 am at the campground. We need a volunteer to lead the short hike.
Pot Luck after Hikes:
After the hikes, we will have a pot luck lunch at a campsite located near the trailhead parking lot. Approximate time 2:00 pm. You may notice the starting times for the short hike and the pot luck are later than usual. This is because we are scheduling everything around the long hike which had been planned previously. We want everyone to finish their hikes at the same time so we can all enjoy the festivities afterward together.
To be provided by Grand Traverse Chapter:
Hot dogs, buns, condiments, drinking water
What everyone should bring:
Dish to pass with serving utensil
Eating utensils – we do not have any paper plates or plastic silverware left and don’t want to buy any more. (If you don’t bring utensils, your meal may be limited to a hot dog and chips)
Beverage of your choice; drinking water will be provided.
Folding chair – picnic tables very limited.
Setup:
Mike, Debby, Patty and Dave will arrive Thursday night and claim a couple campsites for the weekend close to the parking lot that we will use for the picnic. If anyone else would like to camp with us, you are welcome.
Location:
Attached is a map showing the meeting place:
