We are excited to announce our partnership with PyData Calgary for an evening with two sessions about graphs, machine learning and more.

Summary
What do an underground mine and a consulting firm have in common? We'll find out in a talk given by Pete Tunkis (Lead Data Scientist @ Arcurve) and Mike Morely (Director of AI/ML Strategy @ Arcurve).

We also have Sajjad Hussain (Data Science Lead @ Trafigura). He will discuss different aspects of building successful data-driven solutions that are not just limited to training machine learning models.

Challenge: project planning and team building can be difficult when trying to balance skills, experience, and candidates' availability to get the right people on the job.
Proposition: leverage data on roles, experience, skills, and capacity to dynamically recommend the best teams using graph technology. The Time Mine investigates the feasibility of using block modelling methods from the geology domain combined with graph data science to create a skills recommender and professional services capacity modelling platform

We will focus on:
• Ontology/business knowledge and ML models integration,
• How to select the correct data,
• How to convert a business problem into a technical one,
• Identifying the right set of features and algorithms, the importance of model explainability and possible solutions.

Bios
Pete Tunkis is Lead Data Scientist with Arcurve’s Advanced Analytics team. He has over a decade of experience in data-driven research, analytics, and project management. His strengths lie in combining deep knowledge of research best practices with industry application, adapting to changing scenarios and quickly learning and understanding new skills and complex systems. Pete earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from The Ohio State University with a focus on behavioural analytics, and he brings with him a strong understanding in both statistical/machine learning approaches and qualitative research methodology. Before joining the Arcurve family, Pete worked in government, academia, banking, and insurance in Europe and the United States. Otherwise, he enjoys yelling at the TV when the Calgary Flames are losing and is always up for a game of darts.

Mike Morley is Director of AI/ML Strategy with Arcurve’s Advanced Analytics team. He developed his first knowledge system in 1986 and has been developing software designed to augment the abilities of people, organizations and industries ever since. Leveraging a degree in Geological Engineering, Mike has spent the past 25 focusing on addressing the needs of engineers, data scientists, and analysts across the Environmental, Mining, Oil and Gas industries with innovative software solutions and technology inventions. He is a sought-after speaker on the subject of innovation, data and machine learning as applied to environmental and engineering industries.

Sajjad Hussain has been a Data Science Lead at Trafigura for the last three years. He has been building solutions for different companies using a data-driven approach for nine years. He also worked in various industries, including retail, e-commerce, investment banking, commodities trading and IoT. In the past, he has worked for CSIR, Eclerx and MSCI.
He is also the co-founder of a successful startup called Heuristech Labs in the IoT analytics space. He specializes in building end-to-end solutions, including machine learning, deep learning, NLP, cloud services etc. He is also a mentor to cohorts and startups and a technical speaker.
