Ekphrastic Poetry: Poems Inspired by the Arts
Online via Zoom
Cost: $40.00 per person.
Online registration only.
I had no idea what ekphrasis was until I searched for it. Neither does my spell checker which kept trying to correct the spelling to "emphasis." Ekphrasis is an Ancient Greek term for a written description of a work of art. So, ekphrastic poetry, poetry being an art form itself, is influenced by another work of art. In the Iliad, Homer's description of the images on the shield of Achilles is 130 lines long. Join us for an intensive weekend reading and discussing poetry. This year's focus will be on the amazing ways poets have drawn inspiration from works of art. We will explore the realm of ekphrastic poetry with Janée Baugher, one of the leading authorities in the field. She defines ekphrasis as "descriptive writing influenced by the visual arts. Beyond the written word, however, responding to art can engender self-reflection, creativity, and help writers to build characters, plots, and settings."
Kay White writes: "What does art bring to a poet? I love the double shot of creativity when a poet considers an art piece and writes a poetic interpretation. That's called ekphrastic poetry. Get over the word and into the action. The interaction gives me a deeper understanding of both the art and the poem. The combination can triple the reader's experience of Artist, Poet, and Personal".
