Middlemarch, Part 2 of 3

George Eliot’s Middlemarch is have a bit of a moment lately. Her great novel is a “study in provincial life,” about how relationships work (or don’t), how a great web of sympathy ties all our lives together, and how “the growing good of the world” depends on unhistoric hidden lives.

If you’ve read some Jane Austen but wanted a bit more philosophy woven in with your wit, George Eliot has you covered. She translated formidable German philosophers such as Feuerbach and Spinoza, and brings her acute attention and these great ideas into this book.

In this second discussion, we’ll discuss the middle of this march. (Say up to Book Six or thereabouts.) Then we’ll finish it in September.
