How did humanity discover liberal democracy? Why do some nations become free, peaceful and prosperous while others remain trapped under tyranny? And could we one day live in a world without dictatorships?
Journey to Democracy: The End of Tyranny is a weekly discussion group based on the book of the same name by Gearóid Carey.
Throughout history, most people lived under kings, emperors, dictators and other rulers they had little or no power to remove. Then something extraordinary happened. Humanity began developing a new way of organising society: liberal democracy.
Today, hundreds of millions of people enjoy freedoms, rights, opportunities and levels of prosperity that earlier generations could scarcely have imagined. Yet billions still live under authoritarian governments, and even established democracies face serious challenges.
Can we build a future in which every person lives in a free and democratic society?

### What we'll explore

Each week, we'll explore ideas, historical events and contemporary issues, including:

  • What liberal democracy is and why it matters.
  • How different countries made the journey from tyranny to democracy.
  • Why some democracies succeed while others fail.
  • The institutions and principles that protect our freedom.
  • The threats facing liberal democracies today.
  • How we can support the spread of liberal democracy around the world.
  • Whether a worldwide federation of liberal democracies could help bring about the end of tyranny.

### What to expect

This is an informal, friendly and thought-provoking discussion group.
We'll introduce a topic, explore some of the ideas from the book and open the conversation to everyone.
You don't need to have read the book or have any previous knowledge of politics or history. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to think, listen and contribute.
Different perspectives are welcome. The aim is not to tell people what to think, but to explore ideas, question assumptions and learn from one another.

### Who is this for?

Anyone interested in democracy, freedom, politics, history, human rights, international relations or the future of civilisation.
Whether you're passionate about democracy, sceptical about how it works or simply curious about how societies change, you're very welcome.

### Our bigger question

Could the 21st century be the century in which humanity finally brings tyranny to an end?
Come along, join the conversation and help explore what a freer, safer and more prosperous world might look like.

### Important note

This is an independent educational and discussion event, not affiliated with any political party or campaign. Participants are encouraged to express their views freely, listen respectfully and challenge ideas rather than attack individuals. Disagreement is welcome; personal abuse, intimidation and harassment are not.
