Picnic at Hanging Rock

In October, we'll discuss Picnic at Hanging Rock, a parable of imperial anxiety set in colonial Australia. With the 19th century over and the Victorian age less than a year to run, three schoolgirls and a teacher vanish in the burning sun while on a picnic excursion to Hanging Rock in southern Australia.

With its hallucinatory strangeness, the 1975 film by the same name has become a classic of Australian New Wave cinema. You are apt to find it an unsettling portrayal of place, silence, and disappearance. It’s on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and many other streaming platforms.
