AT - Massie Gap to Fox Creek - NOBO Mile 502.1 to 511.9
Details
Virginia Section of the Appalachian Trail - Mile 502.1 to 511.9 NOBO
Distance: Total 10.3 miles, we will have to do the approach/spur trail again
Difficulty: moderate/Difficult (very rocky area)
Elevation: 1,510ft up and 1,270ft down
Type of hike: Point to point, will require Volunteers for a 30 minute shuttle
Entrance to Grayson Highlands has a fee.
Some things to know before we start:
Trail becomes very rocky, wear sturdy shoes and bring poles if you use them. We will also be traversing open balds so hats, sunglasses and sunscreen would be useful. The weather here tends to be a little moody, it can be sunny one minute then rainy and foggy the next. Just be prepared to get wet and have layers.
We will drop several cars in the early morning at Fox Creek to beat the crowds. There are only a few spots here. Then shuttle in as few cars as possible to the trailhead at Massie Gap.
We will head across the rocky balds of the highlands. There will be some technical sections where you will have to watch your footing. We will go in and out of several low forest and rhododendron tunnels. Through some pine forest with a bunch of creek crossing and bridges. Then back onto some balds called the Scales we will stop around here to eat a snack for lunch then back into some rocky pine forest again. Stop for a quick break at Orchard shelter then head out to the cars.
WHAT TO BRING
We always suggest carrying the 14 essentials when going into the woods. You can download a pdf file here that discusses these essentials. Here. (Thanks Lane)
Because it’s the Appalachian Mountains, be mindful of the weather and bring the necessary waterproof outer layers, insulation, water, and snacks to be safe.

LATECOMERS AND "NO-SHOWS"
It’s important that everyone is on time (or early). We would hate to leave a hiker behind because they’re running late. If your plans change and you can’t come on the hike, please change your RSVP so we’re not waiting for you or looking for you.
*** Failure to change your RSVP, or let us know at least an TWO hour ahead of the hike's start time, qualifies as a 'No-Show' with me, and you may not be able to join future events. ***
