I’m officially on my ACL Comeback Tour and you’re invited! 😄🥾

This is a fun, inclusive Smokies hike with three route options so you can choose your pace for the day: relaxed wildflower wander, steady fitness hike, or a combo that’s the best of both worlds.

If folks want, we can grab lunch together in Townsend after the hike. Two hiker favorites:
Peaceful Side Social (outdoor seating)
The Abbey (outdoor seating along the river)

MEETING LOCATION

Main meet: Townsend Wye

Date: Saturday, March 14, 2026

Time: 8:40 AM

Arrive early to get your pack ready and boots on.

Parking tag note (Smokies rule)

  • Parking tags are required for vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes in GSMNP
  • You can buy a daily parking tag at the Townsend Wye
  • You can buy an annual pass at the Sugarlands Visitor Center
  • If you buy online, you must print the tag and display it

Optional carpool idea (totally self-organized) If you want to carpool to reduce parking stress, feel free to arrange it in the comments. Some people can meet at IGA in Townsend and head out by 8:15 AM. Bev will not be at IGA (I’ll be at the Townsend Wye)

DETAILS

We will have a short but important meeting at 8:40 AM at the Townsend Wye where we will sort into O1, O2, and O3 groups. After that, we’ll drive to the Schoolhouse Gap Trailhead (carpooling is suggested because the parking lot is small, but it is not required).

ROUTE OPTIONS (comment O1, O2, or O3 when you RSVP)

O1: Whiteoak Sink (4.6 miles | elevation: low, fairly level)

Estimated off trail by 12pm noon.

This is the easiest option and the most beginner-friendly.

Vibe: relaxed pace, “smell the flowers,” great for beginners and anyone easing back from injury

Beauty: early spring wildflowers, quiet woods, and a small waterfall plus that tucked-away Smokies feel

Hiking route:

  • Start at Schoolhouse Gap Trailhead
  • Hike up Schoolhouse Gap to the Whiteoak Sink turnoff
  • Turn left through the horse gate
  • After hiking in Whiteoak Sink, we’ll see a trail on the right that is an out-and-back to a waterfall
  • Back on the main trail through the sinks, we’ll continue to the cave area
  • Then we hike back to the Schoolhouse Gap junction, turn right, and return to the trailhead

O2: Schoolhouse Gap out-and-back (4.4 miles | elevation gain: 503 ft)

Estimated off trail around 11:30.

This is the fitness-friendly option with more elevation than O1.

Vibe: steady, more continuous pace for hikers working on fitness goals

Beauty: wide trail, creek sounds, and that peaceful Smokies “old roadbed through the woods” feel

Hiking route: start at Schoolhouse Gap Trailhead, hike up, then return the same way to cars

Leader needed: If you choose O2 and you’d enjoy helping everyone feel welcome and making sure everyone in the group makes it off trail in one piece, let me know when you sign up.

O3: Combo Route (about 6.8 miles | elevation gain: 503 ft)

Estimated off trail around 12:30/1pm

This is the “best of both worlds” option, and it’s the one I’ll be leading.

Leader: Bev (returning from an ACL injury)

Vibe: mixed group (some rebuilding, some training), not rushing

Hiking route:

  • Hike up Schoolhouse Gap, turn left through the horse gate into Whiteoak Sink
  • Slow down and enjoy the Whiteoak Sink portion (waterfall spur + cave area)
  • Return to the Schoolhouse Gap junction
  • Continue up Schoolhouse Gap to the end of the trail, then return to the trailhead

WHAT TO BRING

  • We suggest always carrying the 14 Essentials when going into the woods. Even though we won’t need most of the items on this hike, practicing the habit means we’re more likely to have them on the hike where conditions surprise us.

Minimum needed for every hiker on this event:

  • 1 to 2 liters of water
  • Snack(s) for energy
  • Electrolytes (optional but recommended)
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Layers

LATECOMERS AND NO-SHOWS

  • It’s important for everyone to be early, or at least on time. We would hate to leave a hiker behind because they are running late (it happens).
  • If your plans change and you can’t come, please update your RSVP at least an hour before the event begins so you don’t end up on the “No-Fly list with our group.”
