Time: 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Meeting Point: Whatipu Carpark (please arrive 15 minutes early)
Distance: Approx. 14–16 km
Difficulty: Moderate (some steep sections, muddy trails)
Description
Join us for a spectacular day on the wild west coast as we complete one of the best loops in the Waitākere Ranges. Starting from Whatipu carpark, we’ll head up the Gibbons Track to enjoy panoramic coastal views before descending into the lush, remote beauty of the Pararaha Valley.
We'll follow the Pararaha Stream through native forest and boardwalks before reconnecting with the Muir Track and returning to Whatipu via the windswept beach. Expect variety: high ridgelines, stream crossings, muddy flats, dunes, and wide open skies.
This hike is best suited to walkers with a moderate level of fitness.
What to Bring
- Good hiking shoes or boots (trail can be muddy and slippery)
- Daypack with water (minimum 1.5 L), snacks, and lunch
- Rain jacket and warm layers (the coast is exposed and changeable)
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
Important Note
All participants take part at their own risk. Please ensure you're physically prepared and carry appropriate gear for the conditions. There may be no cellphone coverage in sections of the track
