August Meetups, Message Board Postings, and Save the Date

From: Rex and Lisa B.
Sent on: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 12:01 AM

August meetups have been posted on the calendar.  We have a meetup on the 12th at Norwood Park and one on the 25th at the Cedar Bark Park.  And don’t forget the Austin Pet Expo on the 18th at the Palmer Events Center.

On another note, some of you have may have noticed in the What’s New section an increase in Message Board postings regarding a member’s post who was looking to get a Great Dane puppy and wanted information from members on any local breeders.  Several members provided feedback on breeder’s they had experience with.  However, one member posted a comment about a legitimate breeder that was derogatory.  Many owners of her puppies came to her defense and commented about the quality of her breeding program.  The member who posted the comment pulled it down and apologized to the breeder for comments made that were not factual.

The Message Board is a group forum where members can ask questions, give as well as get information and tips, and provide feedback.  It is a tool to not only help members communicate with each other, but to also provide education.  As Organizer of this meetup for a number of years, I sometimes find it necessary to remind members of Message Board Posting Etiquette.

Whether posting a new message or responding to one, please think before you write, especially regarding controversial topics.  Often times, a person will write something they would never say to someone face-to-face.  Please refrain from using language that is derogatory or inflammatory about a person.  Make sure your information is factual before you post or comment, and make sure your language and tone is respectful of others.   The Message Board should be a place where all members can feel comfortable posting, commenting or reading information.

The comment in question characterized the breeder as a “puppy mill”, when in fact, that was not the case at all.  I think all our members would agree that true puppy mills are unconcerned about the welfare of the animals they house and are places where helpless animals are subject to neglect and abuse.  Members of PAWS of Austin, the local Great Dane Rescue, can certainly attest to that fact, given that they have participated in a number of puppy mill raids to assist in the rescue of animals.  And because of that, Courtney with PAWS is once again organizing the 3rd annual Texas Puppy Mill Awareness Day (PMAD) on September 30th at Fiesta Gardens, so save that date.  This event provides the opportunity to educate the public on the reality of puppy mills.  There will be vendors, booths, food and entertainment.  More information will be provided when the event is posted on our calendar.

If anyone has questions or concerns about anything, please feel free to email me directly. Thanks for your support in making the Austin Area Great Dane Meetup Group not only the largest Great Dane Meetup group in the U.S. and Canada,  but the best as well.
