One of the joys of watching films from classic Hollywood is the abundance of uber-talented character actors who appeared in film after film. Ward Bond was just one of them, and tonight guest host Marty Perlmutter will lead us through a discussion of one of his films, the John Ford WWII classic They Were Expendable, and we'll celebrate Bond and all our favorite character actors along the way!

ABOUT THE FILM

After a demonstration of new PT boats, navy brass are still unconvinced of their viability in combat, leaving Lt. "Rusty" Ryan (John Wayne) frustrated. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, Ryan and his buddy Lt. Brickley (Robert Montgomery) are told they can finally take their squadron into battle. The film portrays the struggle of the PT boat crews to survive against overwhelming odds, and explores the themes of courage, sacrifice, and the cost of war.
