Let's discuss QUEEN CHRISTINA (1933)!
Details
Greta Garbo’s iconic Queen Christina (1933) blends political intrigue with a bittersweet romance as the young Swedish monarch attempts to balance the weight of the crown with her longing for a life beyond duty. Based on a semi-fictionized account of the real Kristina (1626-1689), the film follows her as unexpected love and impossible choices collide.
Rouben Mamoulian, the innovative filmmaker behind Love Me Tonight, known for his fluid camera work and elegant sound design, directed the film. Garbo also had approval over her leading man, her one-time flame John Gilbert. And don’t miss the famously enigmatic final shot, and a terrific Cora Sue Collins as the young Christina.
Danny Reid from [pre-code.co](https://pre-code.com/queen-christina-1933-review-greta-garbo-john-gilbert/)m calls the movie "a fully formed portrait of a woman that is trying to fully form herself in a world filled with selfish backbiting and double edged expectations." See if you agree.
This month’s pick comes from our member Bernie Friedman, winner of this year’s Milestone Birthday Film Choice Lottery.
You can stream Queen Christina on the usual streaming services. You can also find it on archive.org, but the transfer to digital isn't all that great in that version. Check this link for more options. Many local libraries also carry the DVD.
