THE BOMBAY GREENWAY PROJECT

SPEAKER: ALAN ABRAHAM

Alan Abraham will introduce us to the exciting Bombay Greenway Project, which aims to turn Mumbai’s railways into greenways, proposing to create over 1000 acres of urban greenery in a city deprived of recreational space. Alan will discuss the plans for this Greenway over the existing railway lines – creating a flat, traffic- and stress-free space; which will be an environment-friendly transport + leisure solution, turning Mumbai into a truly 21st century city (in terms of green space & connectivity). Alan will also discuss other green city projects including work at Juhu Beach and Carter Road, aimed at increasing green spaces in Mumbai.

Alan Abraham is Joint Principal Architect of Abraham John Architects - an architecture, design, landscaping and urban planning firm based in Mumbai. Alan’s design approach is to re-connect architecture with nature, make optimum use of space, natural materials and customised furniture, lighting & landscape to reinvent and transform spaces. He creates design that inspires and approaches projects with an understanding that architecture has a unique power to influence lifestyle and society. Alan has also been working on urban design solutions to improve Mumbai and make it a more livable, green, eco-friendly city through proactive initiatives such as THE BOMBAY GREENWAY PROJECT, Winner of the International Urban Planning & Design Competition, Velo-city 2013, Austria.

BOOK TALK: ELEMENTAL INDIA

SPEAKER/AUTHOR: MEERA SUBRAMANIAN

Join award-winning journalist and Fulbright-Nehru fellow (2013-14) Meera Subramanian for a multimedia presentation exploring the human and global health implications of India’s ravaged environmental landscape. Her narrative nonfiction book, Elemental India: The Natural World at a Time of Crisis and Opportunity, is based on travel across the country, learning about the ordinary people and micro-enterprises determined to guide India into a sustainable future. Publishers’ Weekly gave it a starred review and Kirkus Reviews called it “right thinking and accusatory in all the right places.” Meet an organic farmer who is reviving his land after the onslaught of the Green Revolution; villagers in Rajasthan who are resuscitating a river run dry; cook stove designers questing after a smokeless fire; and biologists bringing vultures back from the brink of extinction. And in Bihar, one of India’s most impoverished states, meet a bold young woman teaching young adolescents the fundamentals of sexual health. By investigating these five environmental crises, framed around the five elements, Subramanian discovers individual stories that renew hope for a nation that has the potential to create a sustainable and prosperous future, for India, the earth, and all her inhabitants.

Author and award-winning independent journalist Meera Subramanian writes for national and international publications including Nature, The New York Times, Orion, Caravan and others. Her first book is Elemental India: The Natural World at a Time of Crisis and Opportunity, published by HarperCollins India in 2015. (And as A River Runs Again: India's Natural World in Crisis, from the Barren Cliffs of Rajasthan to the Farmlands of Karnataka, by PublicAffairs in the USA).
