From measuring your Carbon intensity to raising awareness in your organization

Details

According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, sustainability encompasses not only ecological but also social aspects. This also applies to the software sector.
Furthermore, there are other important goals that we want to achieve in our software projects.
In this meetup, we will explore how to measure what matters to understand where our resources are going and to determine actions to use them better.

ABSTRACTS
How to measure the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) of your cloud software with OpenTelemetry and Cloud Carbon Footprint
Prof. Dr. Andreas Brunnert (Hochschule München)
Have you ever wondered how much carbon is being emitted by your cloud software? Then this talk is for you!
I will show you how OpenTelemetry can be used to collect the necessary data to calculate the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) value of your software system. Since OpenTelemetry is compatible with a wide range of data storage and analysis tools, you can use open source tools such as Prometheus and Grafana to create dashboards or alerts based on the collected data.
I will conclude the talk with a demo showing a carbon emissions dashboard for each API call of Java-based microservices written in Quarkus and Spring.

Join us for an insightful session on implementing a Green Software Engineering Bootcamp within your organization. Drawing from our successful experience with the IT Sustainability User Group, we'll share practical strategies for raising environmental awareness among software developers and IT professionals. Learn how we structured our bootcamp format to effectively engage participants and create lasting impact in sustainable software development practices. The presentation will provide you with a blueprint for implementing similar training programs in your own company, including tips for overcoming common challenges and securing stakeholder buy-in. Through real-world examples and case studies, we'll show how our bootcamp can lead to concrete initiatives and measurable improvements in sustainable software development practices. Discover how our presentation to the IT Sustainability User Group generated significant interest and resulted in multiple implementation requests from other organizations. This 30-minute session will equip you with actionable insights to kickstart your own Green Software Engineering awareness program.
