Inspiration Event: Real Life Examples for working with Green Software Principles

Details
We are excited to invite you to a new live event of the Dutch Green Software community!
The Green Software – the Netherlands community is for anyone with a passion for green software development and supports the Green Software Foundation’s (GSF) mission to create a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tooling and best practices for green software. We envision a thriving Dutch Green Software Community empowered to take charge of its future.
Keynote 1: Reduce your carbon footprint with dynamic workload shifting through Time and Space on Kubernetes
With the rise of tooling for measuring energy consumption in Kubernetes, users can now measure and reduce the carbon emissions of their workloads. In this session, Lisette van Leeuwen and Zeid Adabel, both Software Engineer at Ortec Finance, will introduce Sailfish, a high-performance computing framework developed and made open-source by Ortec Finance. Sailfish natively operates on Kubernetes to handle distributed computations on a container level efficiently. Ortec extended the high-performance computing framework to become carbon aware using live data from electricity providers. That, together with the flexibility of public cloud providers for Virtual Machine provisioning, the solution can make shift through time and space to compute anywhere in the world – preferably when (Time) and at (Space) premises connected to electricity grids are powered by renewable energy.
Keynote 2: Get started with optimizing Microsoft Azure cloud: Go Green and lower your CO2 footprint quickly
Optimizing your Azure cloud is more than chasing cost savings: questions about how to improve the sustainability of your data platform usage may come your way or already reached you. *Henk van der Valk, Performance engineer & founder at CloudXcellence.com*, demonstrates some simple tips&tricks that will help you to get started and become green! Or just enjoy learning from all the common mistakes we encountered and resolved in the field!
Keynote 3: Cutting through the noise: the science behind cloud and AI sustainability.
In this keynote, David Kohnstamm, Leafcloud co-founder and CSO, will use back-of-the-envelope math to examine the actual footprint of a GPU used for AI for a year and show how easy it is to break down the tools from the big 3 (AWS/Azure/GCP) into simple terms that they tend to hide. He will also discuss the fundamental flaws at the heart of the data center model and consider ways to improve it. Finally, he will examine the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and how they apply to data center residual heat, cloud, and AI. In other words: Cloud & AI sustainability sans the bullshit.
