Lady Bird Park Trailhead (good beginner's ride)
Details
If you are not yet a member, you can join us on this ride by starting a 30 day trial membership. The $20 annual dues are not required during the trial membership period. Give us a try and see how fun it is to ride with us.
We will meet in the big parking lot in the back of the park, adjacent to the short loop to the dog park and trailhead. You have to drive past the ball fields and buildings at the front of the park. There isn't much parking next to the trailhead so we meet in the big lot.
This will be a relatively easy ride at a slower pace than most of our rides, rarely exceeding 10MPH. We do ask that you please wear a helmet and bring your own water.
This ride has multiple possible turn-around points. We will ride about 4 miles from Lady Bird Johnson Trailhead south through Los Patios and under I-410, and further south under Austin Hwy to the battlefield near the Black Swan Inn by Rittiman Rd. Frank will provide some history of what happened there. Some may choose to turn around for a total 8 mile ride. The rest will continue down to Petroleum Dr, and maybe over to the US Army National Guard armory, which will be about 6 miles for a total 12 miles round trip.
We will also likely visit a very old oak tree near the Ladybird Johnson Park trailhead. It looks like it might have been in the creek basin from before any Spanish explorers arrived over 300 years ago. It is adjacent to the original route of El Camino Real that connected Mission San Antonio de Valero (we call it the Alamo) with the original and short lived missions of East Texas. We might speculate on who could have slept in the shade of this tree....
