Understanding Grief & What’s Normal | Live Grief Support | Julia Samuel MBE

Details

“Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity—the price you pay for love.” — Earl Grollman

### Grief hurts. Healing is possible. You're not alone.

When someone you love dies, the world keeps moving, but yours has changed forever. Some days, you might feel like you’re barely holding it together. Work, responsibilities, and daily life continue, but inside, you’re struggling. Maybe you feel pressure to “carry on” as if nothing has happened, or perhaps the grief hits unexpectedly, like a wave that knocks the breath out of you.

Whatever you’re feeling, it’s valid.
And you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Join renowned grief psychotherapist Julia Samuel MBE for a free live grief support session, where she will share her expert guidance on coping with the death of a partner. With over 30 years of experience supporting the bereaved, Julia will provide practical strategies and compassionate insights to help you navigate your grief journey.

### How do I know if what I’m feeling is normal?

  1. It’s normal to feel a ‘messy mix’ of emotions
Fear, sadness, numbness, anxiety, anger, exhaustion, jealousy, guilt, and confusion are all natural parts of grief. These emotions can come all at once or in waves, unpredictably. You’re not “going mad”—you’re grieving.
  2. Your brain and body are grieving too
Grief can affect concentration, sleep, appetite, and physical health. These changes are your body’s response to stress and loss. They’re a part of the process, not a failure on your part.
  3. You may feel like a different person
Many people describe grief as feeling like they’ve landed on another planet or feeling lost within themselves. That’s completely normal. Grief changes us—it’s not about getting back to who you were, but about learning to integrate the loss into who you’re becoming.
  4. Suppressing grief doesn’t make it disappear
Avoiding or bottling up grief can delay healing and, over time, may lead to physical or psychological distress. In fact, unresolved grief is linked to a significant percentage of mental health struggles. Facing it, gently and with support, is a key part of healing.
