What we’re about
Psychology has become a must-know in today’s world, thus it’s not only faculty students who pursue learning it. Almost any person around me has read/listened to psychology-related content, it’s probably the same in your case, but you probably already figured out: most of what circulates in the mainstream (pop-psychology) is not ultimately useful.
Individual and independent study is necessary to filter the truth from the rest, but sometimes the motivation weakens, or the time/energy is not enough. This is where the idea of making this group came to me. If we can study independently, and gather every once in a while to share our findings and distill our understanding, then we’ll progress much faster. It’s also a good opportunity to find like-minded people and create meaningful connections.
The format will be somewhat like this:
- We agree on a topic in the previous gathering (ex: language acquisition, false memories, identity formation, …).
- Individually, we study on the topic (books, videos, research papers, …) and share findings among ourselves (peer-to-peer or in the comments section of the Meetup event).
- We gather in a coffee shop or library, and discuss the topic in-person.
-------------------------
Rules:
- Each member is expected to share from his/her findings – we benefit as well as contribute.
- Bringing insights from other sciences is encouraged (neuroscience, biology, anthropology, …), but not from pseudoscience or politically-related sources.
- Sharing from personal experience is allowed, but for safety, avoid overly-personal details.
- Commercial or political promotion is NOT allowed – this is an independent study group, for the sole purpose of connecting and learning.
- Practice common sense at all times.
