Sustainable Software with Open Source

Details

Learn tangible ways we can build greener software through efficiency improvements, infrastructure choices, optimizations in our development lifecycle, and contributions back to the open source community.

The Sustainable Tech team from Scott Logic will also introduce us to the Tech Carbon Standard, a new open source project to help organisations understand how their tech stack corresponds to reportable emissions (GHG Scopes 1,2,3).

This talk will provide specific, practical techniques you can implement, including:

  • Writing efficient code: algorithms, caching, revisions
  • SDLC optimizations: Green Git, testing efficiencies, reproducible builds
  • Leveraging green hardware and cloud infrastructure
  • Contributing back upstream: efficiency PRs, green policy changes
  • Using metrics to guide optimisation efforts

You’ll learn practicals you can directly apply in your next project and contributions to reduce CPU cycles, technical debt, and other inefficiencies that negatively impact sustainability. By adopting these best practices in our code, dependencies, and development, we can have a real and lasting reduction in the environmental footprint of open source software.
