Sustainable UX

How sustainable are the digital products and experiences we build and run? Truth is: they can have a massive negative impact on the world. Still too many websites load tons of unnecessary data and thereby produce tons of unnecessary CO2 emissions. Still we build products focussing on our users, while harming other actors (human or non-human). Or still we build products that hang on to existing inequalities or constantly exclude certain people. How can we change this?
Sustainable UX (SUX) and the Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) 1.0 help to identify negative impacts on all levels of sustainability and to create sustainable solutions by design.
In my talk

• I will give you an introduction to the Web Sustainability Guidelines 1.0 and Sustainable UX
• I will show you, how sustainability and digital are related and why it is important to create sustainable digital products and websites
• And I will give you practical tipps, how you directly can start doing it and using the WSGs and SUX

At the moment the sustainability of digital products is often still left to IT-Experts. Even though digitalization concerns whole organizations from core and non-core departments the holistic view is often missing. That creates not only fragile business processes, but it also means environmental impact considerations are often siloed.
Taking a holistic view on the matter and understanding that digital products are at the core of extraction is important. We extract raw materials from the earth to create all our devices that run our software, which often runs on data that is extracted from people and their behaviour.
Claire will highlight in her talk that digitalization might result in efficiency gains, but not necessarily in overall decarbonization what we might know at the Jevons paradox or the rebound effect. If Digitalization & Ecological Sustainability should create any meaningful impact it is crucial that not only a small minority of IT Experts occupy that topic, it needs to be taken into account from organizations as a whole.
