Guix virtual meet-up - Guix RISC-V Bootstrap with Ekaitz Zarraga

Details
During our next Guix Social event, engineer and long-time free software contributor Ekaitz Zarraga will tell us about the efforts to bootstrap Guix on the RISC-V architecture, the journey of a team of brave engineers to make our beloved operating system even more trustworthy.
One of the reasons why we love Free and Open Source software is the possibility to inspect the source code of the binaries that we run on our machines. But how is this the case, exactly? When we inspect a particular code base, what do we know of the process that converts said code base into its binary artefacts? How can we tell whether the original code or the intended build process have been altered, either intentionally or by mistake? What safeguards are in place to protect us from build errors and deliberate attacks?
Two projects in particular, the Reproducible Builds and Bootstrappable Builds projects, have set out to address these questions and to provide safeguards around the process of building software from sources. These projects aim to lay the foundation for a secure, fully-inspectable computing, arguably a form of computing that does justice to the core principles of Free and Open Source Software.
