Talk:
Build and Evaluate Data Engineering AI Agents

Abstract:
Join this session to understand how AI agents communicate with Apache Kafka and Apache Flink to extract insights from a data streaming platform. The objective is to demonstrate how data engineering AI agents could be built using agent frameworks like AWS Strands and how to impose an observability layer on top of these agentic frameworks to evaluate AI agents. Code demos would use Anthropic Claude Sonnet and Opus LLMs. Data engineering agents would use MCP tools to communicate with Kafka, Flink and DuckDB.

Bio:
Staff Developer Advocate at Confluent. Designed and implemented ‘Modern Data Platform’ for large scale enterprise use cases. Worked at the intersection of Data(Spark, Flink, Kafka, Kinesis, Redshift, Iceberg, Glue, Hive, Neo4j, Neptune) and AI(torch, sagemaker, vertex ai,kubeflow, LLMs) at cloud scale (AWS and Google Cloud).

Inside Kafka Connect: How Connectors Work

Abstract:
Ever needed to integrate a system that doesn't have an existing Kafka connector? We'll explore the open-source connector framework—understanding the difference between Source and Sink connectors, the task lifecycle, configuration validation, and how parallelism enables scalable data pipelines. You'll learn about Single Message Transforms (SMTs) for data manipulation, error handling strategies, and testing approaches to ensure production readiness. Whether you're planning to integrate a proprietary system or contribute to the open-source ecosystem, this session gives you the conceptual foundation to get started. We will also take a quick look at Kafka Connect Offset Management.

Bio:
Sarthak Sonagara is a Software Engineer at Confluent. He works on the Kafka Connect team, contributing to top cloud storage connectors that power data pipelines for organizations worldwide. Based in Ahmedabad, Sarthak is passionate about building reliable data integration solutions. He enjoys building productivity tools and exploring AI for automations.
