Kafka Queued Up: Unlocking Share Groups with KIP-932

Kafka has long dominated the pub-sub space, but KIP-932 introduces a powerful new consumption model: share groups, enabling true queue-style semantics by allowing multiple consumers to process messages from the same partition concurrently. This talk dives deep into the technical foundations of share groups—covering partition coordination, record state management, offset tracking, and persistence. We’ll unpack the design decisions, trade-offs, and internal mechanisms that make queueing in Kafka both scalable and reliable.
