Kuilau Ridge Trail: Discovering Kauai's Hidden Gems

Details
The Kuilau Ridge Trail on Kauai offers a serene and scenic hiking experience through lush rainforest and rolling hills. Located just past the University of Hawaii's Agricultural Research Station on Kuamo‘o Road (Highway 580), there is a small gravel parking area at the trailhead with space for several vehicles. The trail is well-maintained and gradually climbs along an old fire road, making it suitable for most skill levels, including families.
As you hike, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant tropical vegetation, including native ohia trees and towering ferns. Occasional openings in the forest reveal sweeping views of the Makaleha Mountains and the Wailua River valley below. About 1.5 miles in, you'll reach a covered picnic shelter—a perfect spot for a rest and to take in the panoramic views.
Shortly after this point, the Kuilau Trail officially ends and connects with the Moalepe Trail, which continues further into the backcountry. For our hike, we’ll use this junction as our turnaround point and retrace our steps back to the trailhead. The return journey offers a new perspective on the lush landscape, making it a rewarding out-and-back hike totaling about 3 miles round trip. Please bring proper provisions, including water, snacks, and proper footwear. We will meet at the trailhead at 0845 and begin our journey at 0900.
