Hackers for Literacy

This is a meetup for anyone interested in UX/UI Design, Product Design, Web and Mobile Development and doing good using their professional skills.

The first event will be similar to the one done via the Prototyping User Experiences Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Prototyping-User-Experiences-NYC-Meetup/events/229440317/

I started the "Hackers 4 Good" group to meet other people that want to use their professional skills to give back to their communities – and the world at large – by hacking real world problems, and creating and building solutions that can make a difference.

The hackathon format will be approximately this:

• A chosen non-profit organization, in this case English for a Song™ http://www.englishforasong.org/ , has been invited to provide a problem that they'd like help with – where they think that design and technology can help.

• During the 3 hour hackathon the teams will be able to put together a basic idea and prototype of their solution

• The winning team, and others interested might continue working on the project, if they'd like to.

More about English for a Song (EFAS):

• EFAS is a project that is officially competing for the Adult Litearacy XPrize http://adultliteracy.xprize.org/ so there is a real chance to be part of a team that will bring a literacy app to life, at a global level.

• EFAS is a free, easy to use, accessible, English literacy app for American adults, ESL students, and immigrants. EFAS marries hit songs with fun, customized learning activities that help users improve their reading, writing, and listening skills in English.
