Meshtastic is an open-source, long-range, off-grid communication platform built on inexpensive LoRa hardware. In this guided class, Grey Fox will take you from first principles to a fully configured, working Meshtastic node.

This session is completely free to attend. Participants are encouraged to purchase a Heltec V3 kit (with case, antenna, and battery), which we will have available. If you bring or purchase a kit, Grey Fox will walk you step-by-step through device assembly, firmware installation, initial configuration, and connecting to the Meshtastic app on your phone.

What you will learn:

  • What Meshtastic is and how LoRa mesh communication works
  • Installing and setting up the mobile/desktop Meshtastic application
  • Configuration options and channel settings
  • Firmware installation and best practices
  • Hands-on assembly of the Heltec V3 kit (optional but recommended)
  • How to join, participate in, and build your own local mesh network

Whether you're completely new to mesh networking or looking to expand your practical skills, this session will give you a working node and a solid understanding of how to use it. Perfect for hackers, tinkerers, off-grid experimenters, and anyone interested in resilient communication systems.

Space is limited. Please register on Eventbrite to reserve your spot: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/intro-to-meshtastic-create-your-own-radio-communication-network-tickets-1977636151967

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience with radios or networking?
No. This class is beginner-friendly. If you can use a smartphone, you can learn Meshtastic.

What will I learn in this class?
You’ll learn how to set up, configure, and use Meshtastic radios to build your own long-range, off-grid communication network. We’ll cover the app, device settings, channel configuration, encryption keys, and common troubleshooting steps.

What can I actually do with Meshtastic?
Send messages miles away without cell service, create group communication for hiking or events, build emergency communication kits, experiment with mesh networking, and integrate radios into IoT or sensor projects.

Do I need to buy a radio to attend?
No, but we recommend it. If you buy a kit, we’ll walk you through setup, configuration, and assembly during the class.

Which hardware does this class use?
We’ll be using Heltec V3 devices with built-in battery and case—ideal for beginners and common in the Meshtastic community.

Will I need my phone?
Yes. Meshtastic uses a mobile app (iOS or Android) for configuration and messaging.

Will we cover building a mesh network?
Yes. You’ll learn how multiple nodes relay messages, how range works, how keys affect visibility, and how to optimize your own mesh.

Do I need a ham radio license?
No license is required for Meshtastic. It uses ISM band radios that are legal for unlicensed operation.
