Welcome to the Code for Los Angeles Meetup!
Code for Los Angeles is the Los Angeles Code for America Brigade (http://brigade.codeforamerica.org/), a network of civic-minded technologists who contribute their skills toward using the web as a platform for local government and community service.
At our first event, we would like to talk about what Code for America is about, the types of initiatives you would like to see, as well as do a little group workshop for one of our first initiatives, which is supporting the City of Santa Monica in Open Data!
7:00-7:15 Arrive and settle-in.
7:15-7:30 Introductions & Announcements.
7:30-7:45 Code for America overview. What to expect, why participate, what has been successful in other cities.
7:45-8:00 Introduction to the Santa Monica Informations System Department and the current status of their Open Data Initiative.
Guest: Gary Carter - City of Santa Monica Information Systems Department
8:00-8:30 Group workshop coming up with data sets we would like to see and potential app ideas built on top of the data.
8:30-9:00 Networking time to meet people and team up for projects.
There is no obligation to join a project if you are attending. If you just want to see what this is all about, you are more than welcome.
We are aware that other people have been doing great things in the Los Angeles area, and we would love to involve all of them! Check out the HackforLA (http://www.hackforla.org/) website to read about the hackathon they just recently hosted for National Civic Hack Day this Summer 2013!
If you know anyone else who should join us, bring them along to this Meetup!
