What is a lathe?
A metal lathe is a machine that shapes metal by rotating a workpiece rapidly while a stationary cutting tool shaves away material. Metal lathes create precise cylindrical parts and perform operations such as turning, facing, drilling, and threading for a variety of industries.

Class description:
This lecture-based class covers essential safety, parts identification, basic operations, tool setup, and workholding on HackPGH's 1957 South Bend 10L Lathe. This class will give students the foundation of knowledge that will allow them to transition from theory to hands-on practice for creating simple projects. The lecture will be followed by a demonstration of the lathe's operation by the instructor.

Disclaimer: This is primarily a lecture-based class. Students will not not independently operate the lathe.

Prerequisites: No experience necessary.
