Hacks/Hackers #39 – Crowdsourcing & Citizen Journalism

In April, we'll meet at CORRECTIV to discuss journalism crowdsourcing with Anne-Lise Bouyer (CORRECTIV), Arne Semsrott (Open Knowledge), and Gaba Rodríguez Berón (Tactical Tech) and Laurence Ivil.

Anne-Lise heads the technical team at the nonprofit investigative newsroom CORRECTIV (https://correctiv.org). Prior to that, she co-founded the data journalism agency Journalism++, where she worked for 4 years as a project manager. She has a background in computing engineering. As part of her work at CORRECTIV, she leads the project Crowdnewsroom, a platform for journalists to crowdsource investigations. Together with an investigative reporter, she will present – from an editorial and a technical perspective – early outcomes of the latest investigation created with Crowdnewsroom: “Who owns Hamburg?” (https://wem-gehoert-hamburg.de).

Arne Semsrott (Open Knowledge)

Arne is the project lead for the FOI portal FragDenStaat.de at Open Knowledge Germany (https://okfn.org). He is also a regular contributor to netzpolitik.org and has worked with a range of NGOs, such as Transparency International, LobbyControl, and Whistleblower Network. At Hacks/Hackers, he will talk about his latest project, OpenSchufa (https://OpenSchufa.de). OpenSchufa employs a crowdsourcing approach to open up the algorithms used by Schufa, the consumer credit rating agency that is the de-facto gatekeeper for getting anything done in Germany that has to do with money, including renting a flat or getting a phone contract.

Gabriela Rodríguez Berón (Tactical Tech)

Gaba is a software developer, facilitator and data wrangler from Uruguay, living in the US. She currently works for Tactical Tech Collective (https://tacticaltech.org), where she facilitates the program Gender and Technology. Before that, Gaba worked at The Coral Project (https://coralproject.net), building tools to improve community spaces in journalism. She is also a consultant working with ILDA co-creating a data standard on feminicides in Latinoamerica, has worked with the Internet Freedom Festival, La Nacion, Open News, and co-founded a non-profit that works with data and transparency in Uruguay. She is a feminist, activist, and mom to two kids.

Laurence Ivil

Laurence is a freelance multimedia journalist based in Berlin. Working with citizen journalists across Sub-Saharan Africa, he has co-produced digital media features for the Guardian, Le Parisien, De Correspondent and the New Internationalist, amongst others. Laurence is also co-creator of “Dementia Diaries” (https://dementiadiaries.org/) – a UK-wide storytelling project that brings together people’s diverse experiences of living with dementia as a series of audio diaries. At Hacks/Hackers, Laurence will be sharing insights of working alongside citizen journalists during and after the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, whilst working with On Our Radar (https://onourradar.org/ebola). From crowdsourcing breaking news stories using SMS and WhatsApp to in-depth collaborative features like the award-winning backintouch.org #AfterEbola project, Laurence will discuss the advantages and challenges of community-led journalism.
